Despite a Slow Start, Strawberry Growers Still Predicting a Good Year

Despite weather and disease problems that hampered production at the start of the 2013-14 strawberry season, local growers still anticipate a good year.

“All we need now is a little more normal weather,” said Ted Campbell, executive director of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association in Dover, on Thursday. “We’re still optimistic for a good season.”

Florida provides most of the nation’s domestically grown strawberries during the winter months from more than 10,000 acres of fields throughout Plant City. The Florida strawberry season typically begins about Thanksgiving and goes into March.

Florida strawberry growers fire up marketing efforts in collaboration with Smokey Bones restaurants

PLANT CITY, Fla. – The Florida Strawberry Growers Association (FSGA), as part of its continuing campaign to educate consumers about its unique winter strawberry crop has partnered with Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill to spread the message that fresh-from-Florida berries are on the menu in a special promotion that runs Feb. 10-March 2, 2014.

Florida is the dominant domestic supplier of winter strawberries. Crops are harvested between Thanksgiving and mid-March, and are shipped to locations east of the Mississippi and along the entire East Coast. This market is ideally suited to the Smokey Bones brand, which includes 65 locations in 17 states, most of which are in the same geographic area targeted by Florida winter strawberries.

Smokey Bones’ vice president of culinary Jason R. Gronlund, also a founding member of the FSGA Chefs Advisory Board, wanted to further promote Florida-grown strawberries, so he suggested that the restaurant could boost the berries’ brand exposure through menu items featuring the red, juicy fruit. Gronlund created a limited-time-dessert offering – a strawberries and cream cake. The restaurant also developed a new strawberry cocktail, and will offer a strawberry-flavored ale from its bar selections.

“We are excited to be able to spotlight our winter berries through a popular restaurant brand that is synonymous with great food, drinks and fun. We know our collaboration with Smokey Bones will encourage consumers to purchase and consume more Florida strawberries all winter long,” said Sue Harrell, director of marketing for FSGA.

“Teaming with the actual people who grow Florida’s winter strawberry crop complements Smokey Bones’ culture of developing menu choices that feature the best quality food, including the freshest produce possible,” added Tiffany Walker, director of marketing for Smokey Bones.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is supporting the “Bones ‘n’ Berries” promotion by lending its “Fresh from Florida” logo, which was created to promote the state’s fresh agricultural products. The logo will be placed on collateral material to identify the special menu items.

Local growers and members of the FSGA produce about 15 percent of the nation’s strawberries and virtually all the berries grown during the winter. The commodity has an economic impact on the local community exceeding $700 million. Hillsborough County, Fla., is known as the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World. Smokey Bones is a full-service bar and fire-grill restaurant brand based in Orlando, Fla. It is owned by an affiliate of Boca Raton, Fla.-based Sun Capital Partners, whose portfolio of restaurants also includes Boston Market, Friendly’s, Sweet Tomatoes, Fazoli’s, Bar Louie, and other restaurant brands. Spivey Farms U-Pick Open

April 3, 2013 by FSGA

Spivey Farms U-Pick is open!

Update: 2013 U-Pick season is over.

See you in 2014!

Spivey Farms has opened its farm for U-pick. Pickers are invited to visit the farm Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Sunday 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. If you have any questions that are unanswered on this post, text them at 813-917-1756 or e-mail them.

Learn more about the Spivey Farm family, we documented their story back in 2011.

Berries are priced at $1.00 for 2 quarts, cash only. If you want to pick your berries in half-flats you bring, it’s $1.50 per half-flat (one half-flat = 3 quarts). If you want to pick your berries in a flat you bring, it’s $3.00 per flat (one flat = six quarts).

What You Need:

  • Spivey Farms will provide the quart cups to pick in, but you need to bring containers to store and take your strawberries home. Very deep containers are not advised as piling strawberries too high in your container will cause the berries on the bottom to be severely bruised and may be no good.
  • Considering this is a time of year in Florida when the temperature is warm, make sure to wear loose-fitting clothing. Sunscreen and hats are recommended to avoid overexposure to the heat.
  • You’re more than welcome to bring your own drinks and/or snacks to the farm. If you do bring your own food/drink, please make sure not to leave any garbage remaining around or in the field.
  • For all the tips you need on the hows and whats of strawberry picking/freezing/etc., we highly recommend this site which covers all aspects for you.

Spivey Farms
6101 County Road 39 South
Plant City, FL 33567
Directions

Helpful U-Pick Tips:

  • Dress comfortably. Wear loose fitting clothing.
  • Wear a hat or cap and bring sunscreen.
  • Bring your own containers to transport.
  • If you plan to spend the day, take ice to keep berries cool.
  • Select only firm ripe berries.
  • Be careful not to remove the tops of the berries.
  • Make an effort to pick every ripe berry on each plant rather than jumping from plant to plant and row to row.

The growers will appreciate your consideration and you will reduce the amount of strawberries that are left sitting in the field.

Strawberry crop in fine shape

January 10, 2013 by FSGA

Florida strawberry growers hold their breath as the new year unfurls with crop and market in fine shape

Ripe Red Florida Strawberries in Field

As the new year rolled into its first week, Florida strawberries were in great shape with abundant volume, excellent quality and — unlike last year — a solid market.

“I hold my breath when I say everything’s fine, but there are not too many problems just yet,” Ted Campbell, executive director of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association in Plant City, FL, told The Produce News Jan. 3. “I think the market will be okay. They’re harvesting full bore right now, which means the prices will come down with the volume of the harvest, but I think we’ll be okay.”

Early in the season, strawberry prices were at near-record highs as demand was strong and little volume was available.

Last year, Florida growers got clobbered by a trifecta of calamity: California, which is usually out of the deal by the time Florida comes on in early December, had an extended season; Mexico had tremendous volume; and a very warm winter — even by Florida standards — led to volume that simply crashed the market as growers tried to unload berries anywhere they could at any price.

Things are different this year.

About Florida Winter Strawberries

In 1980, a few strawberry growers began meeting in their homes to discuss the best way to organize a group that would represent the interests of the Florida strawberry industry. On February 11, 1982, the Florida Strawberry Growers Association (FSGA) was born. Hillsborough County is recognized as the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World and the home of some of the sweetest, reddest and juiciest strawberries around.
